When it comes to choosing the right pickleball paddle, most players obsess over surface texture, core thickness, or overall weight. But one spec that often flies under the radar and quietly shapes everything about how you play is handle length.
At RPM Pickleball, we believe the right handle can be the difference between a shot that feels natural and one that feels like you're fighting your own equipment. Here's what you need to know.
The Three Handle Categories
Pickleball handles generally fall into three ranges, each with a distinct impact on your game.
Short Handles (Less than 5 inches)

Short handles are compact by design, keeping your grip close to the paddle face. If you have smaller hands or you've developed a quick, wrist-driven style of play, a short handle can feel exceptionally natural. The reduced length allows for faster wrist action and sharper maneuverability, which is ideal for players who live at the kitchen line and thrive on quick exchanges. The trade-off is leverage. Shorter handles tend to generate less power on groundstrokes, so big hitters from the baseline may find them limiting.
Standard Handles (5 to 5.25 inches)
This is the sweet spot for most players and for good reason. Standard-length handles accommodate a wide range of hand sizes and grip styles without forcing you to compromise on either control or power. If you're newer to the game or still developing your personal playstyle, starting here gives you the flexibility to discover what works best for you before committing to something more specialized.
Long Handles (More than 5.25 inches)

Longer handles open up a different dimension of play. Players with larger hands will immediately notice the improved comfort and natural feel. Beyond fit, the extra length creates more space for a two-handed backhand, a skill that every player should have in under their belt. You'll also gain improved reach on volleys and overheads, and many players report reduced joint stress over long sessions. The only meaningful downside is a slight reduction in close-net maneuverability, where paddle speed matters most.
Where Does RPM Stand?
Most RPM paddles are built with a 5.5-inch handle, placing them firmly in the longer category. This reflects our commitment to players who want reach, leverage, and power without sacrificing quality or feel.
That said, we know pickleball players are diverse. Play styles vary. Hand sizes vary. What feels like an extension of your arm to one person can feel awkward to another
So, Shorter or Longer?

There's no universal right answer, but there is a right answer for you. Think about where you spend most of your time on the court, how you prefer to generate power, and the size of your hands.
